Today increasing numbers of students in American classrooms do not speak English at home. This means that teachers need to spend more time on explicit instruction of English vocabulary at school.
What is Explicit Instruction of Vocabulary?
Explicit vocabulary instruction means that teachers focus on teaching their students the meanings of words instead of expecting students to learn these words by themselves. Spending more time on explicit direct instruction of words in texts has become increasingly important because English is not the first language of many students in American schools. Unless students understand what the words mean, they will not fully understand the text. However, many teachers think that spending time on explicit teaching of vocabulary takes up too much time in the classroom.
