Being addicted to something means being dependent on something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming and harmful such as alcohol or narcotic drugs.

Denial as a Defense Mechanism

Sigmund Freud is known as the father of psychoanalysis. He believed that denial is one of the human mind's defense mechanisms. This means that when a person is faced with a situation that is too uncomfortable to accept, he rejects it and insists that it is not true, despite what may be overwhelming evidence. People may deny the reality of the unpleasant situation or fact altogether (simple denial), or they may admit it exists but deny its seriousness and deny responsibility. The concept of denial is particularly important for understanding and solving problems related to addiction.
