Exercise 6 - Towards academic reading
The purpose of an academic argument is to convince others to agree with your position. Here are some techniques for convincing others to accept your argument:

a. Give clear examples to support your argument.
b. Show why the opposing argument is wrong.
c. Bring extreme opinions to show, by comparison, how reasonable your opinion is.


Experiments on Animals

Research on animals helped us develop cures for diseases such as polio and cholera. However, today many people are against experiments on animals, and claim that scientists force animals to live in harmful conditions. This may have been true in the past but today we have laws to ensure that scientists treat their animals well.
In the above paragraph, the author has used different techniques to convince the reader to agree to experiments on animals.
