Our department has over 80 highly qualified teachers who have many years of experience teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and English for Academic Purposes (EAP). These years of experience have helped us understand how long and hard the roads to academic reading can be for English language learners who leave high school without an adequate academic vocabulary.
Each year we prepare nearly 9,000 students to become more effective readers of academic texts in English. We offer courses at six different levels of difficulty, starting at pre-beginner's level for students who have not yet mastered the English alphabet. At the most advanced exit-level, our students read authentic academic texts in their discipline areas. These areas include the exact sciences, life sciences, social sciences and the humanities.
The department offers synchronous, asynchronous or blended learning as well as conventional classroom instruction in over 50 study centers throughout Israel. All modes of instruction utilize multimedia courseware and collaborative learning via electronic forums and wikis.
Our faculty members' research interests include effective design of computer-assisted language learning (CALL), second language vocabulary acquisition (SLVA), as well as effective ways of using technology to support reading comprehension.
