Words that end in -ology mean 'the study of'.

For example:

Criminology is the study of crime and criminals.
Sociology is the study of human societies.

Words that end in -ology can also mean the rules and procedures that apply to specific disciplines.

For example:

Research methodology means a set of procedures for doing research.
